MEET THE DOGS
Logan (l) is an
Alaskan malamute and is a big puppy. He is cautious
around people but when he trusts you, you are friends for
life.
Position:
all, but mainly he runs lead with Flint
Flint (r) is a
freight Alaskan husky we purchased in Alaska at 8 weeks of
age. He also is cautious in new situations and with
new people but once he has run he loves the cuddles people
wish to give him.
Position:
main lead dog. He is a command leader
Sheyenne
is an Alaskan husky. She has a shorter coat
and lighter build than Flint, but she is a mighty
puller. She loves to give kisses and receive her
cuddles.
Position:
winter of 2010-11 was her first season in harness so she
is being rotated to see where she will work best.
Swing (right behind the leaders) was the main position she
ran since I see potential lead dog qualities in her.
Pilot (l) is a Samoyed.
This is a Northern breed that originates from Russia, the
Samoyed people. Pi is one of the "puppy boys",
4 littermates we kept with their sister moving to
Sweden. Pi a hardworker and never quits.
Position: Lead usually with Whisper (his brother)
but also is comfortable in any position
Whisper(r) is a Samoyed.
And he does NOT live up to his name! He is very
outgoing, loves hugs and people. He is on the
higher end of the energy level too, so getting him
focused at the start of a run is a challenge.
But he is very responsive and wants to please.
Position: Lead but is comfortable in other
positions in the team.
Ice is a Samoyed and
littermate to Whisper, Pilot and Thyme so he is one of
the "puppy boys". Ice is very powerful and a
hard worker. He is very loving to all.
Position: main wheel dog. Ice also helps
out at team.
Thyme is a Samoyed and
littermate to Whisper, Pilot and Ice.
Thyme is the one everyone wants to take home with
them! He is very outgoing and affectionate with
people. He loves his cuddles and will give you
kisses. This is the one that will stick his head
under your coat to get your attention. He is a sweet
boy.
Position: team dog. Thymer also does help
out at wheel.
Cooper is a
Samoyed and older brother to the puppy boys.
Cooper is PIDT's "sam-ambassador"! He is very
mellow, easy going, friendly and tolerant so he
travels with me when I provide talks about dog
sledding and dog safety. In harness Cooper is a
pulling machine and I have found I depend a lot on him
for his personality but also his working
ability. Cooper-Man is very much my dog and is a
very, very special dog.
Position: Main wheel dog. Coop also will
run in team.
Ruby (l) is
a Samoyed and littermater to Cooper and big sister to
the puppy boys. Ruby is just a happy go lucky
girl. She works hard and is always ready to
go. She loves people and guests enjoy spending
time with her. Ruby has provided two litters for
PIDT, with one offspring, Trek, working for PIDT.
Position: Swing (behind the leaders) and
sometimes a short distance back up leader.
Gavin
(r) is a Samoyed and the father to Cooper, Ruby, Ice,
Thyme, Pilot and Whisper. Gavin is 11 yrs. old
now (7/2011) so he is slowing down. He is high
energy or "Tigger" as we call him and has been an
amazing sled dog for PIDT.
Position: Gav was my main lead dog till 2009
and now he runs swing.
Rose is a Samoyed and the
dam (mother) to Ruby, Cooper, Ice, Thyme, Whisper and
Pilot. Rose and Hudson are half siblings,
too. Rose is starting to slow down as she ages
but she still loves to go and if it is not too hot she
works hard. She has been spayed and has a very
heavy coat so overheating is an issue for her.
She is friendly but also loves to be in her box in the
dog trailer.
Position: Wheel next to Hudson usually or team
Hudson is a
Samoyed and half brother to Rose and also the sire to
Trek. Hudson loves people and is happy to sit in
your lap! Hudson is a handful in harness but is
a hard worker, it is just getting him focused at the
start that is difficult.
Position: Wheel and now and then solo lead
during fall training.
Torrey is a Samoyed and
the smallest Sam I own. I call her my pocket sam since
she is so small. But do not let her size fool
you! She runs with Bob (called cani-cross) and
skijors with Bob. Skijoring is where the person
is on cross country skis and the dog is attached via a
line to the person and they work together as a team to
go down the trail and yes the dog is pulling the
person. "Princess Torrey" is very affectionate
with all and is a spitfire in harness.
Position: swing and back up leader. Solo
skijoring and canicross dog for Bob.
Silk is a Samoyed and
cousin to Torrey--their dams are sisters. Silk
came to us when she was 3 1/2 yrs old and has adjusted
living here. She is a hard worker and very
dependable. And she loves her cuddles!
Position: Team usually next to Rayne but
sometimes wheel or swing
McKensie is
a Samoyed. He turned 9 yrs old in June
2011. The winter of 2010-11 Kensie was ill so
was out the entire season. He was missed.
He has always been a hard puller and very
dependable. Cooper and him were wheel partners
and worked together so well it made my job of steering
the sled easy. Kensie loves to give kisses and
yup is happy to sit in your lap.
Position: retired from wheel so now team.
Rayne is a Samoyed and
came to us as a young adult. Rayne came to us
not trusting other dogs or people so I do have to
manage situations. The winter of 2010-2011 he
wonderfully surprised me and allowed guests to pet and
cuddle him! In this picture this guest was one
that Rayne trusted immediately and an 11 yr old boy,
fell in love with Rayne and Rayne with him. It
warmed my heart.
Position: team (usually next to Silk) and wheel
Trek (Trekker) is a
Samoyed and a PIDT breeding of Ruby and Hudson.
Trek was one of two pups in the litter and his sister,
Tollie, lives in Sweden with another Prairie Isle
Samoyed, Yepa. The winter of 2010-11 was Trek's
first year in harness and as he grew stronger, he
became a powerful force in the team. He is
lover! He wants to be with people and will
whine sometimes to get what he wants. He is easy
to work with and learns fast.
Position: rotating to all .
Eve is a Samoyed and we
imported her (summer 2010) from the Vinterskogen
kennel in Norway. At first Eve was
uncorridinated but as she spent more hours working in
harness she became strong and powerful. She
loves to go with the team, especially with Flint,
Logan and Sheyenne.
Position: rotating to all
